Virginia’s 8th District — In front of a packed house, Adam Dunigan formally announced his candidacy for Congress while addressing the Arlington County Democratic Committee. The meeting included local party leaders, elected officials, and constituents. His message centered on service, accountability, and the defense of American democracy.
A former Marine and CIA case officer, Dunigan resigned from working undercover after concluding that he could no longer remain silent in Trump’s authoritarian project. “I loved my job at CIA, but I love my country more,” he told the audience. “I could no longer be complicit or silent as the second Trump administration destroys the moral fabric of this nation.”
Incumbent Congressman Don Beyer was also present at the announcement, and Dunigan praised him for his long record of public service. “Public servants like Congressman Beyer set the example, and his long record of service speaks for itself.”
During his remarks, Dunigan emphasized that his campaign is rooted in a lifelong commitment to service, tracing his family’s three-generation history of military service and reflecting on his own deployments overseas with both the Marine Corps and CIA.
Dunigan also argued that Democratic leadership has failed to meet the scale of the current national crisis, pointing to the murder of American citizens by ICE, the illegal dismantling of the federal workforce by DOGE, and the abandonment of U.S. allies abroad. “I’m thinking of all the times I put my life, and those who trusted me, on the line for a government that I no longer recognize,” said Dunigan, referencing his time as a CIA case officer.
He further framed his candidacy as a generational choice between the status quo and a new generation of Democrats who are building new coalitions to “regain the ground we’ve lost and make sure what’s happening now – never. happens. again.”
Dunigan concluded his remarks by underscoring the personal cost of public service, stating, “Service without sacrifice is just a job, and it’s time to side with the future.”
